After eight years of adamant reign in the Project management certification field, the well-known PRINCE2 methodology is about to undergo its first major update this year.  The revisions to the Axelos’ PRINCE2 guidelines book and the respective Foundation and Practitioner examinations have been announced in January 2017. (Axelos, 2017) But what does this mean to prospective and current PRINCE2 certified professionals? Well, basically there is not much change in the content of the methodology and guidelines book, rather it is structuring it differently, based on solid and continuous feedback that was received from project managers implementing it in their work. The basic changes as stated by Axelos are that emphasis was added to the following themes:

  • tailoring PRINCE2 to the needs of organizations and project environments;
  • the principles that underpin PRINCE2;
  • clarifying the link between the themes and principles;
  • the restructuring of the ‘Themes’ guidance to accommodate specific examples of tailoring;
  • the practical application of the method and guidance, with numerous examples, hints and tips
  • maintaining your certification through PRINCE2 Membership;

This makes the methodology of PRINCE2 even more practice-oriented which is handy for any type of project manager – the more experienced ones as well as the beginners. In addition to its update article, Axelos has launched an extensive FAQ document, which covers any questions that current or aspiring holders may have. (Axelos, 2017)

From personal perspective (having taken the PRINCE2 Foundation exam four days ago), I did not find much difference in the format of the exam. There were more challenging tailoring questions which I suspect were part of the ones being “tested”. Overall, the change does bring clearer structure of the methodology as well as practical information on tailoring for pursuers of the Practitioner certificate.
